WECOME TO EPONA's STORY: EQUINE PROTECTON OF NORTH AMERICA

Photos taken by Carole Shaw visiting E.P.O.N.A. on Saturday October 7, 2006

Meet THOR (most recent rescue) and Annie Surman, one EPONA's dedicated Horse Volunteers taking care of many other horses with Pat who also volunteers on weekends. Here Thor is being led from his paddock over to spend his Saturday evening ritual with Katie (21 yr-old thoroughbred) also rescued with Thor after the family they were with voluntarily surrendered their care over to EPONA's loving arms. One of the new four rescues (and it might have been Katie) was found wondering down the road and that is how the other three were found in need of rescuing as they were not being properly fed, watered, and cared for as needed. First time out seeing Thor, he was rather lethargic or may have been tired and bored. But second time out two weeks later, seeing him again and photographing him was quite a different experience. He was very lively, alert, BARBARO-like, and actually recognized me with treats and camera in-hand and stomped at the paddock gate with my coming and leaving.

THOR's attention is momentarily captured by the playfulness of Petey and Guy, EPONA's two two year old thoroughbreds. GUY who is AKA JAKE due to a name error is the black premarin mare's colt in the J.E.R.O.N.A. (Joint Equine Rescue Operations of North America) you see at the very end. To see the enlarged full screen version, please visit our BARBARO AMBASSADORs GROUP PAGE and scroll one-third down to see THOR's PHOTO. Just click on the link under his photo and ENJOY. Please note, the page there is under construction and it may require a complete separate link as it expands. We ask all our BARBARO ambassadors who sponsor, adopt, or volunteer working with horses in all capacities to donate/contribute to the development of this new project. We need to be ready to deal with passage of S. 1915 and ensuring all rescue operations work together funding, sponsoring, and finding new homes for the saved horses.

THOR (EPONA's newest 16-year-old Artic White PERCHERON gelding enjoys snorting leaves away as he grazes on some grass in his paddock after feeding time. For now, due to severe nutrition he is on three small meals which includes soaked grains, beet pulp, small carrots, and cut-up apple slices. But he really loves those flex cookies. He gets them with his morning meals.

Posted by Picasa Photos & Design by Cle Shaw

We decided on sponsoring THOR because of my grandfather's farm of 100 acres in Hilltown, Pennsylvania had a couple of Percheron Drafts which they used to for plowing and work on a farm with no tractor. Although, they were brown and couple of others were black, still fell for THOR...maybe because of our Norwegian and English heritage. According to my father, he preferred having a horse named after him as it's easier to remember. He does remember Belgian draft horses, a couple of Stallions and Thoroughbreds thrown into the mix of cows and chickens plus 150 pigs after speaking with him tonight. He did say that they always made sure the horses and other animals were well-fed and loved and they never sent to slaugther any of their horses. That's a good memory at 88 years-old. He also said that he was very happy we sponsored THOR. White Percherons like THOR can be seen at Betsy LaMere Photography-Draft Horses.

UPDATE: EARLY EVENING SEPTEMBER 12, 2006

Barbaro improving slowly and steadily
September 12, 2006
KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is improving slowly and steadily according to veterinarians at Penn’s George D. Widener Hospital . “We are pleased with his progress,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “He is wearing the cast on his right hind limb well; we continue to monitor it closely, and we expect to change the cast and radiograph the leg within the next seven to 10 days.” In addition, Barbaro continues to stand comfortably on his laminitic left hind foot. “The left hind foot is progressing well, especially as it grows down from the coronary band,” said Dr. Richardson. “However, we remain cautious, because Barbaro will still need several more months of healing before we’ll know how well the overall hoof structure can be restored.” Barbaro continues to be hand-grazed daily, and his vital signs and appetite are excellent. Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.The next update will be posted on Tuesday, September 19 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition. For more information on Barbaro, please see

UPDATE Sunday September 10, 2006:

Barbaro continues to do well in his recovery with bright spirits and Peter giving Alex latest report. AND, Foggy (Lost In The Fog), had a surprise visit from Wendy, one of our Michigan Barbaromaniacs: Here's the report from Tim Woolley's Forum:

WendyinMI (wendrew)
10:02 am To: ALL

"It must have been the full moon earlier in the week but somehow I managed to get a visit with Lost In The Fog yesterday!

I had been able to contact Greg Gilchrist and he agreed to let me see LITF after the races yesterday at Golden Gate Field. I think he took pity on me because I traveled so far J. So here is how the visit went:

I walked back to Greg’s barn and met him in his office. I introduced myself and we chatted for a short while. I had printed off the posts from yesterday morning so he could get an understanding of the website and what people have been posting. He pointed to the wall behind me and said, “Look! This is what I have received just today! There’s so much that I have been sharing it with others.” Then he said, “C’mon, let’s go see the guy.”

We went back to his stall. Fog was having his temperature taken when we walked in. Fog had a nice normal temperature. We went into the stall and Greg checked for a pulse by his hooves. There wasn’t one and his feet were cold (good signs). I got to give him a pat and thought Fog looked tired. Then we opened the treat jar we brought with us. He perked up immediately with the sound and turned his head to say, “I’M SOOOOOOOO CCCCCCCCUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTEEEEEE AND WOOOOORRRRRRRRRTTTTHHHHHY OF A TRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTT!” It was funny! I got to give him a bunch of treats. WAY MORE than I would give my own horse but Greg kept piling them into my hands. Fog was waiting for his meal and I asked if they had changed his diet any. His assistant told me they feed him the same stuff but less of it in a serving and more servings throughout the day. His appetite hasn’t changed. The visit was short and sweet.

We went back to the office and chatted a little while longer. Greg then abruptly says, “C’mon Wendy, I’ve got a horse you have to see”. We went back into the barn and he showed me Frisco Star. Frisco Star is a HUGE 3 yr old. Just massive in his build. Very muscular, solid build, magnificent. He looked to me like some of the warmbloods that compete in the hunter/jumper world. Frisco came from the same place as Fog. Greg is very keen about this horse and I could see why. He is outstanding. We must start keeping tabs on his racing too!!

We left the barn saying my thank you and goodbyes. I handed him my card and mentioned that if he ever needed a ruling on the golf course to just call me. He said he threw his clubs into a lake last month J and we both laughed. It was a very nice visit and I’m grateful that I was giving the opportunity.

Wendy

UPDATE on BLUERGRASS CAT: September 6, 2006

REQUESTS ON LATEST INFO CONCERNING BLUEGRASS CAT's LEG FRACTURE:

From TIM WOOLLEY's FORUM: Presently little is known other than what appears below:

"From what I understand, it's a 'non-displaced' fracture, which basically means the bone is cracked but still straight & together. Sometimes with rest these will heal on their own. I think they were going to get some medical opinions and I guess they felt like surgery wasn't necessary. Of course he could not race with it & they'll keep him quiet while it heals."

Barbaro's first days outside are now up to half hour daily walks with Dr. Richardson and/or Michael Matz during late afternoons in sunny weather.
**PRAYER VIGILS BARBARO, LOST IN THE FOG, AND BLUE GRASS CAT WILL CONTINUE FOR WEDNESDAY EVENING September 6th and this coming Saturday September 9th at 7 pm EST. Next Barbaro health update is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, 2006 unless there is a unexpected change in his condition.

Team Barbaro studies one of Barbaro's leg radiographs prior to new cast change - now a total of 7 casts done on right hind leg that suffered 3 main fractures and shattering of pastern long bone, past May 20,2006 during Preakness at Pimlico (2d leg in Triple Crown Horse Races).

UPENN UPDATE ON BARBARO September 5, 2006

New Bolton's release: Barbaro continues to do well:Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress after his most recent right hind leg cast change last week. "Barbaro is wearing the new cast satisfactorily," said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "We continue to monitor him closely, and depending on how he progresses, we may change it again within the next two weeks."
The colt's left hind foot, which has laminitis, continues to improve gradually, according to Dr. Richardson. The bandage on this foot is changed daily.
"Barbaro's appetite is great, and we take him out each day to hand graze him," said Dr. Richardson. "His vital signs remain normal, and he seems very happy."
Barbaro is in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

Barbaro out hand-grazing on a shank August 23, 2006. He continues to improve and yesterday, Dr. Anderson visited him inside his stall area. It was warm according to Alex Brown of Tim Woolley Racing and his eyes were very bright and he acted extremely alert -- all good signs. He continues to be serious but stable in condition. His new cast change as of August 27, 2006 is still in excellent shape with no complications as his left hind hoof/foot continues to grow slowly. ICU nurses continue to change his dressings daily after Dr. Richardson or another qualified doctor examines the wound area and surrounding tissues.

TRIBUTE TO KEEP LOST IN THE FOG IN OUR THOUGHTS AS HE FACES CHEMO

Posted by Picasa LOST IN THE FOG WINS KINGS BISHOP RACE & BECAME BEST SPRINTER 2005

UPDATE FOR FOGGY RECEIVED
DEL MAR FAN FORUM FOR FOGGY describes visit with Lost In The Fog at Golden Gate Fields. Sept 3rd by Forum member "apad".

Yesterday, I made a last minute decision to visit the greatest sprinter of the decade. The one and only Lost in the Fog. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see Fog since he was diagnosed with cancer a couple of weeks ago. There were mixed emotions. Should I visit him in his poor condition or should I stay home and remember him as the robust power horse that dominated America's sprint division in '06. The decision was easy. The six and a half hour trek from So Cal to Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley Ca. didn't begin well. I was stuck in traffic for the first hour of the drive and had numerous thoughts of turning back. I hate traffic almost as much as having a few bucks riding on Corey Nakatani. It was 103 degrees when I began my journey from Chino Hills and I arrived to very breezy 55 degree weather. Shorts and t-shirt wasn't such a good idea after all.

A few chirps outside of stall #6 at Greg Gilchrist's barn was all it took for the huge white blaze to peak out of his stall. It was quite obvious that 'Fog had lost a considerable amount of weight and the results from his recent incisions at UC Davis looked like they could very well been war scars from some of his 14 courageous battles on America's most competitive courses.

His feistiness and determination for bite your head off was something to be admired. He's given special feed which is intended for "senior" horses. I'm sure its got added nutrients. Whatever it is, he's eating up like Augustus Gloop in a chocolate factory. I gave him a few pats of his forehead and told him he's got a legion of fans pulling for him.

It was special moment with an incredibly courageous thoroughbred that ran his heart out for two years despite an enormous disadvantage. I've never met a horse this special..

BARBARO's LIGHTER FARE AND SPECIAL CORNER EDITION II

May 2006 was a busy month for Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. Barbara Livingston and Lloyd Fox (Baltimore Sun) captured a few fun moments in the sun while Eduardo Hernandez bathes and grooms him week before Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Even Charles Howard's famous Horse Racing champion Seabiscuit loved a good laugh too! Here he is caught laughing it up at his home Arcadia stable of California in 1940 (New York Times Archives). He was known for his very high-spirited and charismatic horseness.

After an early morning return from his exercise gallop, Barbaro has his mouth checked by his trainer Michael Matz (1 of 3 photos by Barbara Livingston). Again he has some playful frolicks while he gets bathed. He has a tender moment with his pony Messaging in the bottom two. Last photo (bottom lower right) is by Lloyd Fox (Baltimore Sun) who caught Barbaro and Messaging nuzzling 5.18.06.

Happy Birthday Mike! It was soooo wonderful to see you today! You look fabulous. I was very honored to meet your sisters and your mother- you are very blessed to have such a great, caring family! It was great to see Rochelle and baby Gracie and some other familiar faces from Fairhill too. The Saratoga t-shirt looks great on you- nice work Keith and Joy!
Kennett Florist done a fantastic job organizing this event, the cake, flowers and gifts were beautiful and I cannot beleive the amount of mail you received from all over the USA- that shall keep you busy for a while! And all the gift baskets with starbucks coffee, magazines and goodies- wow!
I was so touched when I spoke to your sister Cathy and your Mother and they told me how they hadn't been home since your accident and how your mom's dog is now moving up here too! Your sister Nancy took a flight up to be here at your surprise birthday party! These ladies are worth their weight in gold!
Your face was a picture when you came into the room- and we yelled "surprise!!" You had the biggest smile on your face as you looked around at the people you hadn't seen since before your accident, then smiles became tears as you were overcome by emotion as we sang Happy Birthday to you. It was priceless.
We were all so proud of you when you blew out your candles and then insisted on showing everyone you could take some steps! We were blown away and even your sister Nancy couldn't believe her eyes! She said, "he couldn't do that the last time I saw him two weeks ago!" You have such amazing courage and desire, you are a phenomenon!
Your Mom told me how she and your sister Cathy have been really pampering you! I was laughing when she said that they have been giving you facials and pedicures and even bought you a nose hair trimmer! And boy, it shows- you look amazing. I asked if they had been using Olay products on you because you look younger than the last time I saw you!
Well, Mike we shall come and see you again for sure- hey, you only live a mile away from my house now- we are almost neighbors again! Next time instead of bringing you more to eat, i will bring you some pampering goodies for Cathy and your Mom to use- but don't worry, I won't put any Tag or Axe products in there- you never know what effect that would have on all those nurses in there!!!
Take Care Mike and enjoy the rest of your day!

Lots of Love
Michelle and Allan

American Horse (CLICK On TItle to see Media Player & hear Bubba's music)

I am an American Quarter Horse they say,

I've carried soldiers into battle,

and I've pulled a plow all day.

I pulled your wagons over mountains,

carried children in parades.

I never asked for much,

just water, grass and hay.

I carried the rambling cowboy through,

wind and rain and snow.

I was there with Sam Houston,

when we remembered the Alamo.

My hooves were fast as lightning,

when I'd hear the bugle blow.

And I've been there to entertain

you in a million rodeos.

Remember back when Paul Revere,

rode me through the streets.

From Maine to California,

I helped make this land complete.

I'll carry you upon my back

as long as my heart beats.

So remember, I too am American,

as you kill me for my meat.

********************************************************

Some Comments to Bubba's poetic lyrics & music:

"Great tribute to the American Horses !I am European and in Europe also the horses have had nearly the same history and destiny but since immemorial times ....I love the Horses of all countries and thank you so much for sharing this touching song with us!" (Alexis Van)

"I have just returned from Dallas Crown in Kaufman Texas. I was present at the meeting of the Board of Adjustments when they ordered Dallas Crown to shut down within six months, but the joy in this was tempered by what I saw. Hundreds of beautiful horses were slaughtered as we watched helplessly from just off the grounds.
We must stop this injustice, and with the help of wonderful musicians like you we will!
John Holland (Horse owner)"

"Response by artist on 2006-03-12 ---Thank you very much Mr. Holland. As someone directly connected with this fight, your review means very much to me. I'm glad you liked it and I wish you great success in the fight."

American Horse
What a fitting tribute to a powerful and intelligent animal that helped to shape and enrich lives in America and all over the globe. The thought of inhumane actions towards these and all living creatures sickens me. The S.P.C.A was founded when one brave soul, Edith Latham who saw a horse being whipped and bloodied and other acts of cruelty to domestic animals decided to start the SPCA in 1918. A vegetarian and lover of all creatures she and her brother Milton spoke for those who could not speak for themselves. Great song. Thanks

"All cruelty issues (and there are many) aside, the French and Belgian companies that own and operate the plants are producing a product that is illegal to use in this country. (4 years ago, the Attorney General of Texas agreed). There should be no difference between this "product" and the production of any other ILLEGAL product in America. (It would not be allowed if the plants produced marijuana to be sold in a country where it is legal.)Because of money, which is almost always the issue, the Members of Congress are currently allowing this horror.Such songs as "The American Horse" and Maria Daines' "Set Us Free" have the power to reach the minds of so many compassionate people who will join the effort to stop the foreign interests from cruelly slaughtering our horses then making money from their pain. Thank you Bubba Blues and Maria Daines. For more information, please see www.thln.org or www.saplonline.org.-Dianne W. Short, Texas Humane Legislation Network" March 13, 2006

MY POEM and PLEA for HR503

Help me find the words, Dear Lord, to reach the heart of man

That each will hear this message and will clearly understand.

To some, it may be humble prayer for those who can not pray.

To others, a voice of wisdom that can end unspoken pain.

Each and every person bears a gift to stop this crime.

All were born and living just to be here at this time.

It doesn't matter who you are or where you've stood before.

An open heart is all you need to close this fateful door.

Time is of the essence lest another thousand fall.

In excruciating slaughter, born of greed and hidden gall.

Captive bolt and bleeding while the others watch in fear.

Sold for wealthy foreign appetites, when will Our Country hear?

America's companion who has carried her so far

Across the plains in covered wagons, homestead bound, to farm.

Express mail was a pony, through rain, through sleet, through snow.

Throughout this nation's history are hoof prints leading home.

The cowboy's friend and livelyhood, his song beneath the stars.

All the pretty horses prance through childhood dreams and hearts.

The bloodhorse is bred and trained to bear our triple crown.

An artist gift is born where mare and foal are bedded down.

Please let these words and images move each of us to stand!

It is our duty and our right as stewards in this Land.

Call and write your congressmen on HR503

Let the USA shine proud again from sea to shining sea.

LATEST EVENING BARBARO UPDATE FROM ALEX:

" Just spoke to Kathy Anderson, she visited Barbaro about 4:30 pm this afternoon. She was happy with Bobby, she had not been able to visit for a few days and was pleased with what she observed. Due to serious sense of humor errors in some poems for LOST IN THE FOG and the newest BARBARO's poem added today seen below: Here is what appeared at one point in a few of them: (from our Wisconsin Barbaro Ambassador Debra):

GOT IT! WE ALL HAVE SUCH A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR AND I LOVE IT!! REMEMBER "LOTS IN THE FOG?" "LOST IN THEWOODS?" "WOODS IN THE FOG?" FOG IN THE LOTS?LOL!!!

(Return reply from New Hampshire Barbaro Ambassador):

Amazing what can be created under fire when trying to get something in under Alex's deadline wire...

DIAMONDS... ANY HOW PLEASE BE SURE YOU USE THE CORRECTED 2d COPY I SENT YOU AS I HAD TO PULL OUT A DOUBLE OF GALLIANT FOX... for now I'LL LEAVE GRETCHEN's "LET THEM EAT CAKE"....Melissa sent me an email with this and then I found out AFTER THE FACT it was MARIE ANTOINETTE who said let them eat cake to her people when they had no bread to eat. LOL Who knew it was her wishful thinking that this is what she might have said to the French in reference to their strange gourmet tastes. Carole GRETCHEN, PLEASE FORGIVE ME but somehow, like Melissa, I can see you saying this to the French too! LOL for it's good for one's soul, Barbaro & Seabiscuit teach us!

BARBARO’s Whispering Legacy For ALL
by Cle Shaw and Barbaro’s Big Heart
(Dedicated to those living and others gone to Heaven) Sept. 5, 2006

Where begins this horse’s tale, an epic saga yet to unveil,
Long before time of man, horses trained for running they can.
Brilliant, magnificent with highest morales,
Powerful gallops, envious gaits in chorales,
Men’s glories seek Horse Racing’s Holy Grail.
Horses race first Triple Crown’s Kentucky DerbyTrail.

Inherent in you by God’s hand - Patience in proud stand.
Eleven Champions won all three -Triple Crown’s Victory.
Sir Barton was their first Winner’s Dream;
War Admiral, Gallant Fox, Assault more inbetween.
Secretariat, Seattle Slew,
Citation, Affirmed - to name a few.

Leaves one’s head in a tailspin; review what Horses did win.
Awestruck by Smarty Jones in 2004 - first two jewels his score.
Birdstone took Belmont by storm,
“Overpowers Smarty Jones” was his norm.
Strange bedfellows throughout history;
How “Run For The Roses” sets horses free.

Art of Horsemanship - we stay until night turns to day,
Trainers hope to achieve what we all want to believe.
Miracles will come as Heaven’s Wind blows;
Between our horse’s Arabian ears as their proverb goes.
“Would sell my kingdom for a horse,” Shakespeare once said.
Echoes Love for Bluegrass Cat to Lost In The Fog freshly read.

Comes trainer’s “Respect” please; Moving with jockey’s breeze.
Close bonds cannot be broken; Fire and Spirit lines souls yet unspoken.
Vital to hail legends Seabiscuit’s and War Admiral’s names,
Every hundred years comes their rebirth like a Phoenix from flames.
Glistening streaks with hooves of lightning sired bloodline Man O’ War’s;
Come “Beautiful Barbaro” & “Powerhouse Bernadini” - rising stars.

But elusive Triple Crown’s number three would Jazil’s Belmont be.
Behind these stories are mysteries, studying Arlington’s safe track histories.
Twenty seven champions remembered as Barbaro recovers.
What might Sherlock Holmes find beneath as “Dead Zone” track uncovers?
May Just Ducky, Big Attlet, Gringa Hug, and Our Momento who died,
Be racing in Heaven’s Glory now as Winged Angels on the other side.

Then Heaven’s Gate opened for Saint Liam & Pirate’s Bounty by Fate.
“Streets On Fire” Liam took a bad fall & “Best Sire” had given his all.
Horse of the Year 2005 and California’s Top 2-year-old winner are no more.
Only 6-years-young was Liam’s life; But Bounty’s was 11 years plus 1 score.
Forever in history’s Hall of Fame, leaving a legacy of stake winners by name.
Liam’s dam Quiet Dance will love him forever;
Wygod’s River Edge will miss their Bounty together.

Horses’ lively natures reflect what is good and demand our respect!
Robert Smith Surtees knew that there are no secrets so closer to you,
“As between a rider and his horse,” helping to win each race’s course.
But now a new direction has begun for Barbaro’s new race to be won;
His along with Bluegrass Cat’s & Foggy’s healing quest for each son.
“Save America’s Horses” his Jackson family and we now act as one.

September 7th is Congress’s choice, while Bobby’s folks speak his voice.
Has America been reduced to cave man - eating horses where time began?
Kentucky Derby Champions - Crown Winner’s Circles - Rose Blankets put aside,
This is one very new Horse Race all Americans must speak and abide,
These bills put on temporary hold must now be voted and counted stands,
People cannot ignore horses’ death screams like humans shot within our lands.

America’s horse lovers agree; Congress stop Texas’s horse slaughter spree!

Marie Antoinette’s words, “Let them eat cake.” instead of our horse herds!
Winston Churchill knew “your beauty and grace are good for the soul of man.”
All US Congress must see videos that “speak the truth” only as they can.
No horse owner would eat his own family & we are not cannibals of hand.
America’ Symbols of Freedom & her Pioneering Spirit embodies our stand.

But this horse’s tale shows a strange twist in its equine prose.
Barbaro’s fame gave public’s choice doctor a new name.
Equine surgeon saving “Magnificent Bobby’s” life would turn to Alcor,
A polar bear with shattered paw leading our great pioneer as before.
Difficult surgery it was; but at least we tried and did our best.
God’s Hand intervened sending Alcor to Heaven for rest.

Once again, Barbaro’s fans prayed for all to be healed if they stayed.
Labor Day came upon us, whispering Barbaro heal without any fuss.
Then came the news clear out of the blue,
Naturalist Steve Irwin just died too!
His Australian zoo and fans simply could not believe!
Loyal Barbaroians began prayers for God’s Angels to receive.

Close friend’s quote, “He died doing what he loved best,” Yahoo wrote.
Seeing Barbaro’s wisdom here, if Steve had owned horses, it is clear.
Circle of Life is hard to take, “Crikey, it’s nature’s way!” He’d say.
From World’s deadliest creatures to devilishly clever stallions by day,
He’d have made quite a horseman - if he had a different course;
Having a Champion like “Heroic” Barbaro as his chosen horse.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO RELAX and ENJOY our Georgia Ambassador's wonderful CIRCLE OF LIFE VIDEO, just one of many at her adjoining website For The Love Of Barbaro (by Melissa Harden). It beautifully portrays some of the most memorable Champion Horses throughout History. Click directly on COL Video link above (part of BARBARO VIDEO COLLECTION) at For The Love Of Barbaro.

Well, seems Melissa has dealt with a Zoo at her place today, Sunday, and surrendered to Barbaro's whispering "How about a tribute video to Mike Rea from his special horse buddies?" She did another exceptional job with people donating photos to help create a special video to be submitted hopefully, to ABC's Extreme Makover Home Edition to help the Rea Family out. It is believed that on June 16, 2006 while Mike was putting Maud's Girl through her paces, she got spooked on the tracks and threw him off which caused him severe blunt head injuries. Like Barbaro, it will take him at least a year or longer to recover.

Special thanks to Fair Hill Training Center families and Tim Woolley's and Alex Brown's friends for helping make the video possible. Or as Melissa puts it..."Barbaro makes it impossible to refuse him anything." So while she deals with the present Zoo of her mother's Great Dane and her beloved dog buddies wanting her full attention she asked for "HELP.'' So, here's her newest creation:

P.S.: From Melissa -

'Bobby just had me change my cell ringtone from "Who Let the Dogs Out" that I put on last summer when my dogs kept getting out of the yard, to "Call to the Post!" I surrender!'
...maybe we need to send in the cavalry.

Barbaro's Horse Trivia: (Sunday, September 3, 2006)

DID YOU KNOW?

Barbaro and Bernadini are related! Man O' War or "Big Red 1" ( Big Red 2 - Secretariat) is part of both their family bloodlines according to researcher Dorothy Ours. She recently was a guest on Blood Horse's "Talkin Horses" and in April finished one of the best books called "Man O War: A Legend Like Lightening" just published in May 2006. (publisher: St. Martin's Press)

Speaking of zoos, earlier, found a very good description on Horses!

'HORSES'

Described by the French zoologist Le Comte De Buffon as 'the proudest conquest of Man,' the horse is one of the most important domestic animals in the history of humankind. Belonging to the Equidae family, which also breeds zebras and mules, horse's scientific name is Equus caballus. Within the species are several breeds bred deliberately for speed, strength, and endurance.

Originally hunted as food, horses were first domesticated in the steppes of central Asia between 4000 and 3000 B.C. Historical records show they were used for plowing and harvesting the land, transporting goods and people, carrying soldiers into battles and voyagers to foreign lands. racing, and tournaments. The Centaur of Greek mythology united horse with man, forming a powerful creature, and citizens of Ancient Rome considered stallions the supreme sacrifice to the gods.

Beautiful, trained horses were indications of social status. Kings, generals, and men of power were all trained as horsemen. Famous examples of notable horsemen and their trusty steeds include: Alexander the Great and Bucephalus, and Hernando Cortes and El Morzillo as well as legendary Zoro and France's famous Muskateers.

Highly intelligent animals, horses have large complex brains and well-developed nervous systems. They have an exceptionally keen sense of smell and hearing. Their "flight or fight" response is a natural instinct which alerts them to impending dangers. And, the enormous range of colors amongst individual breeds is huge - including black, chestnut, white, brown, and creamy ivories to golden tans and grays. More noteably are the exotic patterns including the palominos, painted pintos, and roans. Many horses feature distinctive markings including the blaze, or white splash of color on their muzzles and stockings also called white ankle markings.

Today, there are over 60 million horses worldwide. In addition to the wild horses of our Sourthwest, there are three major groups of domesticated horses: ie, draft horses, ponies, and light horses used for riding. Whether they are domestic or wild, horses are breathtaking creatures - both regal and magestic - as we all have seen by photographs taken of these great champions here and abroad...(Part provided by Barnes & Nobles publications).

By Mark J. Barrett: When crossbreeding an Arabian to a Pinto, you combine the smooth action of an Arabian with the fulloer body of the Spanish horses brought to Americas in the 16th century.

By Ron Kimball Stock: The beautiful Arabian is a consummate example considered the well-spring of all other breeds and the principal foundation of the Thoroughbred. It originated in the Arabian Peninsula some 4,000 years ago. Big Red Man O War and Big Red Secretariat were strawberry roan Arabians.

By Mark J. Barrett: Graceful Morgans were bred especially for riding. All Morgans are descended from the stallion Justin Morgan who was foaled in West Springfield, Massachusetts in the late 1700's. He was never beaten in a race whether under saddle or in harness!

By Ron Kimball Stock: White colored arabians with their silky manes and tails flagging course effortlessly accross grasses showing their endurance and highly-spirited natures that have made this breed a byword for "Equine Grace and Power."

By Mark Barrett: In reference to Paints and Bays that canter - A free-wheeling herd includes partly-colored horses splashed with either black or brown spots along with solid-colored bays of various shadings and markings. The boldly patterned Pintos take their name from the Spanish word Pintado - meaning painted.

By Ron Kimball Stock: The noble Arabian is referred to as "The Aristocrat" having the characteristic dished profile with small, tapered muzzle and large, wide-spaced eyes. The broad chest and strong back make for great endurance.

By Mark Barrett: In cold weather, Minature horse are protected by thick coats. Increasingly popular, these small horses are bred for both intelligence and temperament. And they form exceptionally close bonds with people and other animals.

By Mark Barrett: Strikingly handsome Draft horses sport feathered fetlocks, heavy hooves, and muscular conformation characteristic of horses originally bred to pull plows, wagons, and drays with maxium power and traction.

By Mark Barrett: Trotter horses are bred to be high, wide, and handsome. In gray colored ones they have black skin markings on their legs and an overall coat composed of both light and black hairs. This coat will lighten with age while their silky manes and flowing tails retain their moonlight coloration.

By Yva Momatiuk & John Eastcott/ Minden Pictures: Wild horses and ponies can survive on nutrient-deficient grasses and endure many other hardships in their daily lives. An entire group will drink deeply from waterholes putting aside any differences regardless of their species so that life may be sustained in in a dry southwestern desert land.

By Mark Barrett: Describe the Chestnut Arabian Champion in beautiful reddish-gold tones as he canters proudly across open domains, drawing every eye to his regal bearing and vibrant colors. Long-distance flat racing between Arabians and Anglo-Arabs is popular in many parts of the world. Each country that breeds Arabian horses has its own studbook.

MORE ON ZOOS: Monday & Tuesday, September 4 - 5, 2006

Today's headline featured a very sad and shocking fairwell toAustralia's renowned daredevil, naturalist/evnironmentalist Steve Irwin, who was killed by a deadly Stingray's poisonous barb penetrating through his heart. Despite CPR efforts he died on his way while being airvaced to the nearest hospital. He was filming a documentary on "The Ocean's Deadliest" that inhabit Batt Reef off the northern coast of Queensland, Australia. He is survived by his American wife Terri (from Eugene, Oregon) and his two young children Bindi Sue and Robert. There is more information at Tim Woolley's Discussion Forum (www.timwoolleyracing.com). His death at just age 44 has devastated the entire nation and Irwin family. He and his father were famous for making us all aware of the beauty and respect for Wild Animals and reptiles. He will be sorely missed as a father, zoologist and Australia's leading AMBASSADOR!

Hundreds of thousands of mourners arrived at his home Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland - leaving flowers, wreaths, and special momentos. Originally, the zoo and wildlife part were started by his parents which later became a major tourist attraction for his fans. He also did film series for Animal Planet and MGM's The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course (2002). And he periodically teamed up with Jack Hanna on Wild Animal segments.

EXCERPT FROM YAHOO NEWS: "The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist, and one of the proudest dads on the planet, said his close friend John Stainton. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, "Crocs Rule!"

OTHER NEWS: (from Tim Woolley's Discussion Forum)

Unfortunately, the Wild Life Sanctuary in Colorado is being forced to close. There are an estimated 150 animals of lions, tigers, bears and other exotics which require replacement homes or euthanization. Barbaro asks you to please visit www.wildanimalsanctuary.org/closure. If someone can help find homes for these animals please help as you are doing for Barbaro. He thanks you for your support!

Special Thanks to Tricia in Kentucky for making us aware there is also a special 7 minute video ("View Closing Video") which will bring some tears (have kleenex handy). As we all support helpless horses to protect and preserve our heritage, please network with people you know who can help these other helpless animals too.

In Tricia's words "Let us continue to support Barbaro, the Fog, and anti-slaughter of horses bill because we believe in making a difference. If one horse (our Beautiful Bobby) can make a difference, just think what all of us together can do!" Plus: Don't forget Bluegrass Cat who recently fractured his leg in Travers Race against Bernadini, two other very great Champions verified by Alex @ TIm Woolleys!

Monday, September 4, 2006 (Labor Day)

Also from Alex with bit of horse humor of his own: "Update 596: Returning to Fair Hill, I had three more to ride after the break. Two of which were nicely uneventful, one of which was intent to try to remove me from the saddle (rearing, leaping and lunging). Fortunately luck prevailed, although I had to apologize for some colourful language. Tim breezed Red Aspen and Gator Nation after the break on the woodchips. Tim was on Red Aspen and Jesus Bracho (Fair Hill's resident jockey) was on Gator Nation. The 5/8ths breeze seemed to go well for all concerned."

And from Gloria comes a very special poem to Lost In The Fog:

Lost in the Fog, such a mystical name,

For a magical horse who's achieved so much fame,

A sprinter who soars above mere mortal ground,

A champion who's proved that his talents abound.

Excitement and joy you have given us all,

And thankful we are that in your special stall,

Surrounded by comfort and care of your friends,

You can see all that love through your own special lens.

Your spirit is shining, to vanquish this foe,

And we will hold on until you say "let go."

We're with you, in this your most challenging race,

And praying that you will receive extra grace.

You're not "lost", but we're "searching" for ways to convey

How much you have shown us that words cannot say,

Please know that we value what sets you apart;

For, Lost in the Fog, you've been "Found in our Hearts."

And now, for all those calling yourselves "BARBAROMANIACS" here's something special: ONE QUESTION, DO ANY of USA TEAM BARBARO, or TEAM BARBARO, or CANADA TEAM BARBARO, or any LOVING HORSEOWNER also fall victim to EQUINE DISEASE? DIAGNOSIS: EQUINE MANIAC with Equimania.

NEWS BULLETIN FOR POSSIBLE EQUINE DISEASE (Courtesy of Jo Singer)

*****HEALTH ALERT- Equine Disease Bulletin DSM-EH.1*****

(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Equine-Human Interaction Version 1)

EQUIMANIA: A serious mental disorder in which occupation with equine and conjunctive/supportive feline and canines interferes with the ordinary tasks of daily living and significantly interferes with normal human social interaction. Top Left Baltimore Sun AP, Barbaro enjoys grass at Fair Hill Training Center Week of Preakness, May 17, 2006.

Bottom Left, Dr. Richardson exams daily Barbaro's fractured Right Leg, (Sabina Pierce UPENN, July 2006).
Edgar Prado visits for the first time May 30, 2006 spending quality time together with Barbaro (Sabina Pierce UPENN).
Latest Update 1: According to Alex, Barbaro had another good evening and Friday morning after he spoke briefly with Michael Matz. He is stable but still in serious condition at George D. Widener Hospital, New Bolton Center in Kenneth Square, PA. And, another special delivery of a 3 months supply of Springtime's special Spirulina wafers and Tracelytes arrived for Barbaro care of Dr. Richardson early this morning. Hopefully, he will get better more each day with these formulas specifically designed to prevent and treat existing laminitis and leg injuries.
Recently, there have been numerous news articles on Laminitis and Founder as medical experts try to resolve the shrouded mystery about this difficult disease that baffles the doctors and horseowners. One such article by Rustin M Moore DVM writes on behalf of the AAEP Foundation the following:
EXCERPT:
"Barbaro's quest for the Triple Crown turned into a fight for his life, bringing much public attention to the fragility of horses' legs and feet...His doctors continued to emphasize his recovery would be dependent upon successful healing of his bone fractures as well as prevention of laminitis in his opposite healthy foot/leg. The fear of laminitis was realized 7 weeks later...after it developed in his left hind foot. This silent killer that affects horses around the globe was now a severe complication in Barbaro's otherwise excellent recovery.
Despite marvelous veterinary progress made in equine surgery, anesthesia, with design and development of state-of-the-art implants for fracture repair, the ultimate outcome for horses with life-threatening injuries often depends on effectively treating pain and preventing laminitis.
Laminitis (founder) is a severely debilitating, painful disease of soft tissue laminae that connect the hoof wall (the outer part of the hoof you see) to the coffin bone (the skeletal bone exists inside hoof). Typically, laminitis develops in either both front feet (most common) or all four feet, or in the foot opposite to the limb with severe infection/injury.
To date, the exact cause is unknown. But many factors increase the risk for laminitis including colic and diarrhea (GI tract disorders), pleuroneumonia (lung tissues), retained placenta and metritis in mares, ingestion of excessive carbohydrates (grain overload), overgrazing in lush pastures, and endodrinopathies (metabolic imbalance syndrome and
hormonal imbalance).
Excessive weight-bearing and overloading the opposite healthy limb is often affected by severe pain and lameness causes laminitis (crushing the laminae so little blood flow reaches the hoof area and it dies) as seen in Barbaro's case.
Other great horses such as legendary Triple Crown Winner 1973 Secretariat developed laminitis at age 18 and was eventually put down because he succumbed to this horribly painful disease. Since recorded history, laminitis has plagued every breed of horse regardless of size and age. An estimated 15% US horses are affected by it over their lifetime. And, up to 75% of those affected eventually develop severe or chronic lameness and debilitation.
Despite substantial research for past 30 years on laminitis and its development, complete understanding of it has eluded medical experts. Effective prevention and theraputic management therapies and strategies also remain elusive due to complicating factors like
the disease process being encased inside the unseen hoof wall. Advanced technologies are not useful or adaptable for effective study of laminitis, a disease unique to horses.
What frustrates veterinarians, horse owners, trainers, caregivers, and the general public are the high prevalence of laminitis among horses, combined with incomplete understanding of the disease along with emotional and financial high costs.
A survey done by the AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) listed laminitis as the most important disease afflicting horses and the highest priority for further research. A group of leading laminitis researchers...in2004...concluded that this area was woefully underfunded. The United States Department of Agriculture also listed laminitis as a priority area for research funding.
...Like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer research in humans, biomedical research addressing laminitis is highly complex and extremely expensive...To solve the its underlying causes, researchers predict that substantial progress can be made within next five years budgeted to $10 million. Funding to this degree is necessary...to make a significant impact on reducing the prevalence and progression of laminitis while improving the outcome of horses that develop it...
The equine veterinary community is issuing a collective call for support in this endeavor.
The below listed foundations have all listed laminitis as one of their top priorities for research funding. Please call the AAEP to learn about how to make donations for equine research.

While Barbaro and his doctors wage battle against laminitis, hundreds of additional horses will be diagnosed with it each day. Funding laminitis research is "vital" to unraveling unanswered questions about its disease and developing "reliable" preventative and theraputic measures...for all horses." UPDATE 4 Barbaro's next health update will be given by Dr. Richardson on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 so long as there is no significant change to his present stable but still serious condition. "He has now found a path to see more clearly through the woods, but he is still not out of the woods yet," per Dr. Richardson in interview with Dr. Debbye Turner VMD for CBS 2 Early Morning News Show (August 23, 2006).

UPDATE 3b: From http://www.timwoolleyracing.com: There will be a continued prayer vigil for Barbaro, Lost In The Fog, and Bluegrass Cat for both Saturday and Sunday, September 7PM EST. Please continue to take just a few moments to pray for them...Many Thanks To You ALL in advance for your prayers and support to these great champions.

UDATE 3a: From Daily RACING FORM Friday, September 1, 2006

Barbaro's cast may be off soon...
By GLENYE CAIN LEXINGTON, Ky.
- "Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro may soon have the cast on his right hind leg removed, three months after he broke the leg and underwent extensive surgery to repair it."
Barbaro's surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson, said Monday...
that the colt's right leg has healed to a point where the cast might soon be unnecessary.
Veterinarians at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center equine hospital in Kennett Square, Pa., changed Barbaro's right hind cast on Sunday after what Richardson termed "a small crack" appeared in it.
"Based on the new radiographs that were taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast," Richardson said. "The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely."
The University of Pennsylvania release also noted that the X-rays showed no signs of infection in Barbaro's right hind leg. In July, the colt had an infection that prompted Richardson to replace most of the original repairs - a locking compression plate and 27 screws - that he had inserted to stabilize the joint in a lengthy surgery on May 21.
Barbaro's left hind foot which developed laminitis in July, remains bandaged. Richardson removed over 90 percent of the hoof wall July12, 2006...Now Barbaro is in a long 12 month process of regrowing his hoof. His veterinary team changes that bandage daily and so far seems happy with Barbaro's progress...
(PLEASE NOTE THERE WERE ERRORS which were corrected -Cle Shaw)"

Barbaro and his trainer, Michael Matz seen taking a walk at Fair Hill Training Center with the 132d Kentucky Derby winner arriving in Cecil County Monday, May 8, 2006 Photo by Kenneth K. Lam Baltimore Sun.

Michael Matz has visited Barbaro every day since his hospitalization back on May 20, 2006. He was clearly overjoyed at finally being able to take him for short jaunts outdoors while Dr. Richardson took a much needed restful recouperative break since his vigilant care of Barbaro with whom he fell in love after much devoted attentive care. While gone for the week, Medical Team Barbaro gives constant nursing and doctoring care 24/7. Late afternoons these two can be seen walking the grounds of New Bolton Center in Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania. Michael and Barbaro continue to lend each other strong emotional support and an inseparable bond of love.

Before Barbaro, Michael was well-known for his show jumpers competing in 3 Olympic games as a US equestrian team member. He also won five gold medals in the jumpers events for the Pan American Games. He not only rode jumper Jet Run in 1981's Volvo World Cup but also was honored that same year and 1984 as Rider of the Year by the American Grandprix Association. In 1996, he also won a silver medal in Atlanta in the Olympic Equestrian games with his next biggest win in 2004 when Kickin Kris won the Arlington Million. His crowning triump came with Barbaro winning the 132 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

He would unknowingly be dealt another "Profile In Courage" in 1989 when he and his wife survived a serious airliner crash. They helped rescue several children but he desires little credit for himself and deferred it to the jet's crew who succeeded bringing its crippled body to a crashed landing with 185 survivors instead of total disaster.

Below is a special tribute photo to Lost In The Fog who was recently diagnosed with cancer and has returned home to Golden Gate Fields home basenear San Francisco, California on Sunday early noon August 20, 2006. Greg and Lost In The Fog exhibit "Great Courage" as they face LITF's medical ordeal to fight a battle against a very rare Lymphoma. SEE MORE INFO BELOW IN UPDATE 4 September 2, 2006

Prior to the prayer vigil held below, some Tim Woolley Barbaro fans concerned for Lost In The Fog's Welfare wrote these inspiring words to help us all pray for "Great Courage."

August 28, 2006: - original post by Vic Stauffer to Del Mar Racing Fan Forum: Vic is a racecaller in CA and FL who visited with Greg Gilchrist at Foggy's stable where he received a huge goodies basket graciously...

"I went and saw Lost In The Fog today. He looked in great spirits and oblivious to the challenge ahead. I told Greg Gilchrist how much I admired his dedication to his horse. But moreso, how great he's been with the media and fans thoughout his champion career...

As I was talking to Gilly, a woman and her teen daughter walked up with a basket of apples and carrots, a card and a sketch that the girl had drawn of LITF. Greg was so classy in how he greeted them. Took time to answer all their questions and just as they were about to leave - ask them if they'd like to meet LITF. You should have seen the look on their faces as they walked under the shedrow. I'm a pretty hardened racetracker and I thought I was gonna start blubbering and got the heck out of dodge. Just another example that our sport is the best of them all. And our horses and horsemen are to be treasured. How about a photo of Barbaro and Lost In The Fog both standing in KY?

Tonight, I'll say an extra prayer for both of them. VIS"

UPDATE 5: From http://www.timwoolleyracing.com:

Update 573: Jeannine Edwards has just spoken with Greg Gilchrist, Lost in the Fog's trainer. She sent me this e-mail:Just spoke to Greg Gilchrist... Lost In The Fog is being examined and having his ultrasounds as I write this. They are scanning him to see if there has been any reduction at all in the size of the tumors. Greg seemed hopeful, albeit realistic, that there may be some options for Foggy. He said by this time next month... NEXT MONTH...they would have a better idea of whether or not Foggy is going to make it. That's a whole lot better than the "2 weeks to live" we heard 10 days ago. Greg said Foggy has gained some weight back, they are feeding him smaller meals 4 times a day, and when I asked what his daily routine is, Greg said "Whatever he feels like doing." They walk him, take him out for grass, take him near the track to watch training, give him baths, etc. He said right now the horse seems happy and perky, and because of the cancer treatment options available to humans, they are hopeful of being able to try something on Foggy. The problem is that cancer is very rare in equines, and so the treatment data is relatively obscure. Perhaps Foggy will become the "poster horse" for successful cancer treatment. Greg said he will give me an update on the ultrasound findings tomorrow.

EXCERPT: (Continued...LTIF means LIFT)

From another Tim Woolley Barbaro fan came this: "When you switch the letters around for LITF they spell LIFT...Lost In The Fog lifts your spirits."

And, according to Daily Racing Forum's Chuck Dybdal, Lost In The Fog had an examination on Thursday afternoon August 31, 2006 to determine if any of the tumors have shrunk in size since he was diagnosed 2 weeks ago with terminal cancer. "If there has been no new growth or the tumors have shrunk, options include chemotherapy or radiation," said Greg Gilchrist. "One of the tumors is located near his abdomen just below his spine is inoperable." Couple good signs he says are that LITF's appetite remains good and he loves to nip at him meaning his spirits are good. He takes him for daily walks and sometimes to the track to watch the other horses.

Special mid-week prayer vigils held for Barbaro and Lost In The Fog were held Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 7pm EST at the request of Alex, Tim, and crew at www.timwoolleyracing.com to honor these two champions as well as recently injured Blue Grass Cat who suffered a breakdown fracture at Travers in Saratoga, New York on Saturday, August 26, 2006 after coming in second to Bernadini's big win - Barbaro style.

UPDATE 4 on Rare Lymphoma Foggy Has: September 2, 2006

http://www.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?ID=7522

"Forms of cancer found in horses include melanoma, lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma, granulosa cell tumor, and cancers of the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, gastrointestinal tract, and bone.
Though statistics show more than 80% of gray horses over the age of 15 will develop at least one melanoma in their life, the tumors are usually benign. The most common form of metastasizing tumor is lymphoma. This tumor spreads to various parts of the body, and there are very limited treatment options for this form of cancer, which affects less than 1% of the horse population.
"We do have some chemotherapeutic protocols that are somewhat effective, but usually in veterinary medicine our goal of treatment is to maintain a good quality of life rather than to treat for a cure of the cancer," Davis said. "To clear the cancer completely from the system is difficult."
Because it is rare and horses do not often show symptoms until it is too late, it can be hard to diagnosis cancer in equines at the early stages.
"Most of the time when I diagnose lymphoma in horses, I will have a client that is just completely blown away because they'll say, 'A month ago I went to a horse show, and he performed great,' " Davis said. "There is no chance that horse was normal a month ago, but horses in general are all heart. They do what they know how to do, they do what they think they are supposed to do, and they are a prey species; therefore, it is to their advantage for survival to not let you know that something's wrong."

PROFILE IN COURAGE

Posted by Picasa Tim Woolley (Left) and Alex (right) are also exercise riders out for a morning run on Fair Hills Training Center's track early morning. Alex runs and handles the news and Form portion of www.timwoolleyracing.com. Since Barbaro's injuries on May 20, 2006 website now has over 12,000 visits per day. Alex spends close to 5-6 hours daily updating and handling the booming webpages since the site has taken off like Barbaro bolting from the starting gate and winning the first leg of the Triple Crown - the 132 Kentucky Derby. There are no signs of it slowing down.

He has become a familiar face and the lifeline support for www.campaigningforbarbaro.com.

Mike Jensen of Philly.com wrote a very nice article, "To check up on Barbaro, Check out his blog" - referring to Alex Brown. His morning ritual includes meeting up with Michael Matz to get the latest update on Barbaro. He describes him as a 41 year-old Englishman, who exercises 7 -8 horses every early morning at Fair Hill Training Center. Then he has to post the latest to the website as soon as possible. He says, "I always get a little stressed out until I've heard from Michael because I know now that people are just sitting at their computer waiting for that 7 AM update...If for some reason, I don't meet Michael on the horsepath, so let's say the update doesn't happen for another half hour to an hour, people naturally get concerned."... "Well, he's not updated it - there must be a problem."

Michael Matz said, "I really didn't know how big it (the website) really was until we started getting letters."

When Brown decided to do a daily blog on Barbaro before the Preakness, he averaged 120 visits per day. At the time of Barbaro's injuries at the Preakness, website traffic jumped to over 16,000 hits per day. And when he posted that Barbaro was in the recovery pool, he got 3,000 hits per hour. People as far away as Australia, Canada, UK, New Zealand, and Scotland email him asking about Barbaro."

Many concerned people don't even know much about horse racing or attend horse races so he has worked on the site being an educational tool to inform and help people understand Barbaro's world better.

He has embraced requests for Barbaro special poems and videos. Recently this past week his site had their own VIDEO Click on the underlined VIDEO LINK to see and hear "Get Well Soon Barbaro and You Are So Beautiful To Me." Thank you for sharing your special video and memories tribute to Barbaro, Tim Woolley Racing. Barbaro's devout Supporting Team at Tim Woolleys truly are profiles in courage! And, Special thanks to Michael Matz for giving Dr. Richardson a much needed break to rejuvinate him while he was away.
