Although Barbaro was not scheduled to undergo a cast change to his right hind leg until several more weeks, Dr. Richardson found a small crack in cast Sunday and decided it best to refit him with a new cast under general anesthesia and use of pool recovery. Everything went smoothly and medical team Barbaro was able to get new x-rays of his broken leg.
"Based upon new radiographs taken, the leg looked excellent under the cast. The pastern joint looks completely fused, and there is only a small area in the long pastern bone that has a little farther to go before we take him out of the cast completely."
There continues to be no signs of infection and his left foot has daily dressing changes and treatment against infection. He exhibits comfort in his left hind foot and was evaluated Monday by Dr. Richardson as a "BRIGHT and HAPPY" horse with excellent appetite. He remains stable, comfortable but still in serious condtion in the ICU of George D. Widener Hospital in Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania. (photo by Sabina Pierce UPENN taken one of first days Barbaro was outdoors, Aug 11, 2006)Barbaro continues to enjoy the great outdoors still for about 30 minutes daily and has improved a bit in strength. He also is slowly putting some weight back on with his healthy doses of treats, goodies, nutritionals, Lael grass specials, alfalfa, Timothy mix hay and other medication equivalent to human dose of two aspirin per day to control pain and keep him comfortable.
